One of the first fundamental stages of early childhood development I learned about was the phase of the omnipotent band aid. I know as I write this at least four of you is already smiling.
For those less familiar this is the stage between roughly the ages of 5 and 8 when a band aid can cure absolutely any cut, pinch, pain, problem or disease. Gotta a stuffy nose? A poke of blood on your finger? A finger that does not seem able to bleed but feels like it should? Maybe you are suffering from is not really a scrap on your elbow but could one day become one.
A band aid can cure that. Instantly.
The omnipotent band aid is not merely a medical adhesive strip. It is a mark of honor worn with all the pride of a purple heart.
One of the first fundamental stages of early teacherhood development I learned about was the effective administration of omnipotent band aid. The lesson has three basic parts:
Always have a stash of band-aids.
If you want to be the cool teacher (a slippery slope) get the fun one with stuff printed on them.
Be judicious but not stingy. With great power comes great responsibility.
In fact, there is painfully little power in a Medical adhesive strip. Those things cannot do anything other than stop a little bit of blood. if you have a Band-aid, one with a Hello Kitty or Ironman or even….Star Wars.
